One Dress For All Seasons

Personal Style, fall fashion, fall style, winter style, summer styleHelen NurseComment

I cannot believe this is my first post of the year! 2018 has either been that busy already or I have gotten off to a really slow start! Either way, I am glad to be back working and creating content that I hope is useful to you guys.

Today I want to share some style inspiration that comes from one dress with three different looks for three different seasons. Yes I love fashion and shopping and have way too many clothes but I am a proud repeat offender! Nothing brings me more joy than getting great mileage out of my pieces. When buying for TracyChambers Vintage, I always keep my customers in mind and make sure that what I bring to the store can be worn multiple ways. Some of you may own this dress or one like it...try to see how many ways you can wear yours...enjoy!

How To Wear Vintage Now

Personal Style, fall style, fall fashionHelen NurseComment

Yes I am a vintage girl but too much of a good thing doesn't always work out. I prefer to mix vintage pieces with my current wardrobe for maximum style. Adding a vintage piece is the sure fire way to stand out in the world of fast fashion. Don't get me wrong I liiiiive for a good H&M collaboration but I need that something extra in order to avoid looking like a fashion clone. Here are a few ways to add that something extra to your contemporary mix. Enjoy.

My favorite statement sweater! Nothing beats a Coogi classic! Just add some thigh highs and colorful scarf to make sure you won't look like a carbon copy.

It's that time of year again...temps falling...the air is crisp and we begin to pile on the layers, especially a cozy sweater or poncho of some kind.  In order to keep my knits fresh I adhere to some basics. Here are some of my best practices for keeping my knits like new throughout the season.

For starters I NEVER mix my sweaters in a regular wash load. My knits always get special attention as with most of my wash loads. It may be a bit more time consuming to wash this way, but it is worth it in the long run because it keeps my sweaters in top shape.

I use a very mild detergent for my knits. If it so happens that I have run out of my cleaner of choice, which is usually Woolite, I use just a drop (no more than a tablespoon) of a regular detergent or in the past when my kids were little I would use a bit of baby shampoo. I have used a specialty wash for sweaters in the past and I really enjoyed the outcome because of the lovely smell, but it was not totally necessary.  I do however, from time to time, treat myself to a special wash solution when I am feeling fancy:-)

Washing in cold water is really the key to keeping your sweaters and knits in top shape as well as washing them in the gentle cycle.  For the most part, I wash my expensive, fancy sweaters, i.e cashmere, wool, pure cotton, or vintage by hand. I never wring them but squeeze the water out and lay them flat to dry on a drying rack in my tub. For sweaters that are not so delicate, I sometimes fold them over the tub or shower rod, but never hang them on a hanger to dry.

Nowadays most sweaters are made of acrylic and manmade fibers and are machine washable but I still wash them separately and with care which means cold water and gentle cycle mostly on an express timeframe.  Even though these pieces are not as expensive or rare, I still make sure I treat them with care because I want to get the most use out of them and they are cute! Nothing is worse than jacking up that cute cheap sweater that you loved to wear all of the time because you didn't take time to care for it! Hey I love a fast fashion piece just as much as anyone else and sometimes it's those garments that need more care than others.

I hope this post helps guide you in caring for your knits this season and those to come. There are many more practices out there and I would like to hear from you.  Please share some of your best tips and practices in the comments below.  Happy sweater weather!

Tie A Velvet Ribbon...

Personal Style, fall fashion, fall styleHelen NurseComment

I am always looking for ways to add a kick to the pieces already in my closet and in order to do so I like to add ribbon as an accent. I usually go for a satin or grosgrain ribbon but this season I am adding velvet ribbon to my arsenal. It is a super easy and affordable way to switch up any look.  I just make sure to cut the ribbon on a bias to give it a "finished" look when I am lazy. However, I advise stitching the edges for extended use.  Enjoy the inspiration.

Ooooh yummm! Taste the colors of the rainbow. A great way to add color and texture!

This shirt/tunic was cute by itself but with the ribbon it takes on another life.

Leaf Peeping

fall style, fall fashion, lifestyleHelen Nurse1 Comment

Ahhhhh fall...crisp air...changing leaves...falling leaves...everything pumpkin! I am super excited when fall hits because it means that it is time for my annual leaf peeping trip! Yes label me corny with a capital K but there is nothing like a long drive up the Hudson with your favorite music playing and witnessing the glory of God. Talk about self care! This is just one of the ways I slow it down and let myself unwind and unravel. If you like the changing of the season from summer to fall as much as I do I hope you get to experience it this year. Following is a map of peak leaf peeping times nationwide and a few places to visit...enjoy!

Fall 2017 Bootie Report

fall fashion, fall style, Personal StyleHelen Nurse1 Comment

Every girl needs a great bootie in her arsenal when fall hits. I am always on the hunt for a pair that are cute, comfy and classic that way I can wear them for many seasons. Buying classics are a great way to make your clothing and shoe investment dollars stretch because they will always be in style and you can add a trend or two each season. While there are many many styles to choose from these are just a few that caught my eye...enjoy!

What a great day! You know your event was successful if even you had a great time. All of the beautiful people showed up and there was nothing but love in the air.  Marlo Hampton came out and shared her style journey with us, Creme of Nature blessed attendees with the most generous treats to keep your hair tight and Essence Magazine made sure that everyone went home with a copy of the latest issue with my favorite funny girl Niecy Nash gracing the cover.  A special thank you to Gerard Lynneil who captured the day with his amazing eye and thanks to everyone who made it out and for those who couldn't make it...see you next time.

 Beautiful people!

Summer Dresses and Jeans...Fall Transitioning

Personal Style, fall fashion, fall styleHelen NurseComment

The changing of the season is not quite here but will roll in before you know it! Summer dresses will be stashed away soon to make way for cozy knits...but not just yet. I like to hold on to summer a little bit longer.  Check out some style inspiration to keep those summer pieces in rotation as the summer season begins to wind down.

Pairing white jeans and this navy summer dress is a great way to transition both pieces especially for those who are skeptical to wear white after labor day.
